　話は変わるけど、俺、週刊プレイボーイの編集長をやって人間の金銭感覚って私金も公金も同じなんだと痛感したね。当時の編集部は、取材に先立って5万円 とか10万円といった一定の取材費を渡して、後から清算していたんだよ。そのチェックは当然、編集長の俺がやっていた。といっても実態は内容なんかほとん ど確認しないでポンポン判子を押していただけだったけどな。それでも金額くらいは目に入る。そうすると、私生活で気前のいい奴っていうのは、取材費も豪快 に使う。一方で、私生活がつつましい奴は取材費の使い方もつつましいんだな。

　経費精算のために俺の所に回ってくる書類やら領収書やらの中に「10円」というのがあったんだよ。何だと思ってさ。それでよく見たら公衆電話代と書いて ある。そいつは私生活でもすごい締まり屋だった。携帯電話のない時代だから、ライターや編集者は結構、公衆電話を使う機会が多かったんだけど、普通はそん なものを1回1回請求しないわな。だけど、奴はそこまできちっとしてないと気が済まないんだ。

　自分のカネは惜しむけど、会社のカネは惜しみなく使うというのは不思議といなかった。人間の金銭感覚というのは面白いもんだと思ったよ。

アソシエ　そうした金銭感覚と仕事の能力は相関していましたか。

シマジ　それは関係なかった。取材費を豪快に使う奴の中にも、仕事のできるのとできないのの両方がいたし、カネを使わない奴の中にも2種類 がいた。
